As soon as kids begin using the keyboard
to put letters together, they need to start learning good keyboarding skills.
Here at BCCS, keyboading begins in kindergarten. Kids take keyboarding
over and over, every year, until they graduate. Our goal is to have every
student pass keyboarding by the time they graduate from the 8th grade.
Kindergarten
and first grade:
Students use Type To Learn
Jr. to work on left hand-right hand skills. They do this during tech classes
in April and May.
Second through
fourth grades:
The students in these grades
come into the computer lab every day for a month to work on keyboarding
skills. They use Type To Learn. Each session is a half hour long.
Fifth grade:
During February and March
the fifth graders come into the lab as part of their group time with Mrs.
Nagel. They use Type To Learn in 15 minute time blocks. When they pass
all the lessons in Type To Learn, they use Type For Fun.
Sixth grade:
Sixth graders work with
Type To Learn and Type For Fun during their tech classes in April and May.
By this time, most of them can pass the keyboarding test without too much
trouble.
Seventh and Eighth
grades:
During the first week of
school, all seventh and eighth graders take a keyboarding test. If they
can't pass the test, they are signed up for keyboarding exploratories through
the year. Since eighth graders take the keyboarding test for South Christian
HS in February, we schedule them for keyboarding training during the first
half of the year.
